A “Glory to God” concert in Indonesia

On May 17, 2017 the Philippine Orchestra made its way to the South East Asian Music Concert 2017 that would be held in Depok Church, Indonesia on May 20, 2017 and Chief Apostle Service on May 21, 2017. Glorifying God our Father for everything. He gives us is not a simple task, yet made it by  this collaboration of orchestra players from South Korea, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Indonesia. As one of the most memorable experiences for everyone, this program would prove itself as an ultimate way to glorify God with our talents, get closer with brothers and sisters from the mentioned countries, and let us serve one another with our gifts.

After a quick practice in the office of the Makati Church, the group gathered and left Ninoy Aquino International Airport to fly to Jakarta, Indonesia in the evening. Filled with joy and curiosity for the other culture and country, they were embraced in Jakarta at roughly 12 AM by some of the Indonesian welcoming committee consisting of kind brothers, ministers and sisters from Indonesia.  The next day was a day to rest and gather energy for the following days of practice and rehearsals.

The Philippines group was the first group to arrive in Depok but they were soon joined by the other participants – which was a great joy and a lot of fun! On the first day of practice/rehearsal it was amazing to be united as one big orchestra and getting to know each music piece. The lunches together were used to discuss difficult parts in any song and to share thoughts, and of course to gain energy since the practices were really tiring. One of the best things were the fusion of all kinds of instruments, like Angklung, classical instruments, percussion instruments, woodwinds, and rock instruments, over to the collection of songs from various genres.  For the mastered practice we all treated ourselves ice cream in the evening.

On Saturday May 20, 2017 everyone was tense since there were still difficulties with some pieces; but after a rehearsal and run through everything was settled and everybody was excited to eat and to present the hard work later in the concert. During the concert, the attention was on the presenters and the unity was clearly felt. The time flew by in those 2 hours of playing music together. The Chief Apostle, District Apostles, Apostles, and all other brothers and sisters in the audience were joyful and overwhelmed. The message from the Chief Apostle to everyone was that we can glorify God if we serve Him with our gifts from the heart and for others too.

“Let us serve one another; with our gifts” (1 Peter 4:10)

was the gospel from the Chief Apostle Service the following Sunday morning of May 21, 2017. The divine service was empowering and certainly one of the highlights of the whole trip. Unfortunately, the overseas participants had to say farewell to our brothers and sisters from Indonesia since they had to leave right after the service to transfer to a hotel in Jakarta to catch the flights back home the other night. In the afternoon, a sister from and guide for the rest of the day showed us around a market close to our hotel and we had dinner with traditional food together. Once they all arrived back in the hotel, they gathered on the roof of the hotel to celebrate a birthday and to end the evening together. After breakfast and check-out the next morning, the participants from Myanmar and the Philippines, together with part of the committee and Bishop Samuel Tansahtikno and wife, went to the Ancol amusement park in Jakarta. After countless adrenaline kicks, snacks, and fun with the group, they had to leave to the airport transit area to have dinner together. Saying farewell to the committee and the friends from Myanmar was hard but eventually, the Filpino participants sat in the plane bound home to Manila.
